🗣️ Who do leaders talk to when things get hard?

"Leadership isn’t just about being out in front. Sometimes it’s about knowing when to sit beside someone who’s walked before you."

Therapists have supervision. Athletes have coaches. Artists have mentors.

So why do so many leaders try to go it alone?

This week’s article explores what happens when leaders have a trusted space to reflect, not to perform or impress, but to unpack what’s real.

Drawing from my own experience in therapeutic supervision, I share why this kind of relationship is so valuable: it sharpens awareness, deepens insight, and helps us lead with more clarity and care.

We all need someone who’s been there. Someone who can hold space without judgement, ask thoughtful questions, and help us refine our practice.

Because leadership isn’t about having all the answers.
Sometimes it’s about having the courage to pause and ask better questions.

What's happening with Melis

Reading:
Destination Moon by Kate Reid. She is a dear friend of mine from way back in the Ford days, before Formula 1, and world-class pastries (aka Lune). It was such a pleasure to attend her book launch and witness how far she's come.

Listening to:
East Forest. He's a beautiful artist. He's brought together his love of music, spirituality and community in such a harmonious way. It transmits so clearly through his music. ❤️ = open.

Doing:
Doing lots of travel between Mistwood and Melbourne. Trying to find a new rhythm for my life, post the big move to the farm.

Pondering:
Animism. It's the belief that everything has a spirit. Everything. If we all subscribed to that belief, how would it impact the way we relate to nature, each other, and all the things in our life.

What's happening with Ben

Reading:
Articles on anxiety and how gestalt therapy works with it compared to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I've got a 3,000 word assignment that's due. Fun!

Listening to:
Smartless podcast hosted by Hollywood stars Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes. Each week, one of the hosts brings on a surprise guest and they all have a conversation. It's warm, meaningful, and laugh out loud funny. I recently found myself on a plane, in the middle seat, crying with laughter. Awkward much?!

Doing:
Heading to Geelong to co-facilitate a weekend retreat called Awakening of Love, which is the taster for Path of Love. Don't let the 'culty' name fool you! It's a no B.S. deep dive into the human psyche. It just so happens that love lives in our darkest shadows. We just need to know where to point the light.

Pondering:
When spontaneous gratitude appears in my life. I'm noticing a lot of it at the moment. I sense it comes when things are aligned and I feel more relaxed in my own skin. Ahhhhh...

"Leadership is still a deeply personal act. And it’s one we can choose to reimagine, together." Leadership isn’t just evolving, it’s leaping. In this week's article, Melis shares a growing unease: we’re using old models to respond to new realities: polarisation, AI disruptions, climate urgency, collapsing trust in institutions. And these models are manifestly falling short. We still valorise charisma, confidence, control, and performance even when they cost relational maturity, truth, and...

"Emotional intelligence doesn’t just live in individuals. It lives in the space between us." After years of working with groups, I’ve come to see emotional intelligence as a kind of quiet force. When it’s present, things open. Trust builds. People give more of themselves and the work deepens. This week’s article explores what happens when a team brings that kind of emotional awareness into the room. How it creates the conditions for collaboration, clarity, and creativity. And how, when it’s...

"The thing people are protecting is the very thing that most needs to be seen, met, and cared for." We often interpret guardedness as disinterest or ego. But beneath the surface, it’s usually something else: fear. A quiet, embodied strategy that says “don’t let too much in.” In this week’s article, we explore what happens when we start to see guardedness not as a fixed part of our character, but as a creative adjustment, a once-useful protection that may now be keeping connection at bay. And...
